Asterist
What is it?
Asterist is an Augmented Reality IOS mobile app that allows you to transform the night sky into a personal canvas where you can create your own constellations using real stars.
Draw connections between visible stars, give your creations names, add photos and descriptions, and share them with friends and family. Whether you're honoring a loved one, celebrating a special memory, building a fictional universe, or simply expressing your creativity, Asterist lets you leave your mark among the stars.
Features
Create Your Own Constellations
Use an accurate astronomical star map to draw lines between actual stars and create entirely new constellations. Name each creation and make it uniquely yours.
Add Stories, Photos, and Meaning
Attach photos and written descriptions to your constellations to preserve memories, tell stories, or share inspiration with others.
Explore the Real Night Sky
Asterist uses a real-time simulation of the brightest stars and planets. Hold your phone up to the sky and watch the map align with what you're seeing overhead.
Share Without Compromising Privacy
Your constellations are stored directly on your device. No accounts, cloud hosting, or public servers are required. Share your creations privately by sending constellation files directly to the people you choose.
Build a Shared Sky
Import constellations from friends and family to fill your night sky with their stories, memories, and creations alongside your own.
Learn the Stars
Enable astronomical star labels to see the official names of stars used in your constellations, making them easier to locate with star charts and other astronomy apps.
Create Meaning in the Stars
Asterist is perfect for:
• Memorializing loved ones
• Celebrating milestones and special moments
• Creating original stories and fictional worlds
• Sharing family traditions and memories
• Inspiring young astronomers and artists
Why "Asterist"?
The name combines asterism—a recognizable pattern of stars in the sky—with artist, reflecting the app's mission of turning the night sky into a place for creativity and personal expression.
The Team and My Role
I co-directed the project with Sean Bouchard. I also did a portion of the UI.
